How to use PublishLike.

Publishlike - what is it?

PublishLike  - is a free web-service where everyone can create and distribute digital printed editions prepared for tablet computers.  Publishlike allows its users to publish anything: books, magazines, ad booklets, lectures and notes, fiscal reports, goods catalogues, comic books and so on. As of now, two operation systems are supported: Apple iOS and Google Android 3.0+. In spite of this fact, it is possible to publish user's content on devices like iPad (made by Apple, Inc) and tablet computers made by Samsung, Acer and other companies.

Peculiarities  and functions of the service.
PDF (Portable Document Format) file is used on Publishlike as user's content container. It is possible to enrich every page of content with multimedia types like: links to external sites, online video, audio files, illustrations. Content can be distributed for free amongst interested audience or can be sold, thus, making a profit for publisher.

Users of Publishlike
Service itself is very simple to use and can be used by professional companies and private persons as well. Professional or private publishing houses can distribute their magazines, books and other printed editions. Schools, colleges and universities might distribute news and advertising materials amongst their pupils/students and parents and publish information about themselves for everyone who wants to apply for education. Commercial companies who produce goods and services can publish their brochures and catalogues for clients and partners. By doing so, they can communicate better and in more efficient manner  to understand their clients' needs and to promote their latest actions and advertisement companies. Hotels and restaurants using a Publishlike to distribute their menus and advertisement booklets to let their customers know about what's going on and where. This distribution brings them an attention of existing and new clients. Publicly traded companies use PublishLike.com to publish their fiscal year reports, corporate news and other information relevant  to their shareholders. Document distribution in form of applivcation for tablet computer allows to restrict access to designated circle of subscribers and it can brings potential investors as sign of innovative technology use..
Private persons are using Publishlike to publish their own self-written books for kids and adults, greeting cards for friends and colleagues, comic books made by themselves and so on.

What should I prepare before creating an account?

You should have the following information handy:

  1. PDF file with resolution 1024x768 pixels and 72DPI (Aspect Ratio 4:3);
  2. Logo of your magazine with resolution 1024x1024 pixels;
  3. Full name of your magazine;
  4. URL of magazine's web-site;
  5. list of advertisers with description of their products and web-sites links (if any);
  6. picture for background of archive issues page;
  7. cover page pictures for 3-4 issues with resolution 512x384 (at least);
  8. IPAD UDID (Unique Device Identification number), it will be used to make test version of your app for your own iPad.
  9. Xcode Developer profile linked to your Apple developer account (in case if you want money to be sent by Apple directly to your bank account)
Where should I go?

Open your favorite browser and enter http://www.publishlike.com. Hit Enter key. Congratulations! You just arrived to right place to publish whatever you need on iPad.

How do I create an account?

register Click on Register link in upper right corner of site. You'll be brought to an account registration screen. On this screen you have to enter valid email twice (it will be used as your login) and check the mark indicating that you agree with our Terms of Service and your age is above 13 year.

Where is my password?

It will arrive to your email within a few minutes. You can use it as is or change later in Personal Info section of your new account. Just make sure that your password is stored safe somewhere.

How do I sign up?

sign Click on Sign in link on upper right corner of site. Enter your email used to register your account and password. Hit Enter key and, if login/password are correct, you'll be brought to your Publications section.

What are all those terms?

Publication - it is like container where you put all subsequent PDF files. For example, if you're a magazine publisher, then publication is your magazine where you will upload all issues. If you're an author, then publication might be named like John Doe's books (or something like that). And you will upload all your books there.
Issue – it is a single file which represents actual issue of magazine or single book. Shoul be in form of PDF file.
Product ID – an unique identifier used by Apple to track the items sold through In-App Purchases.
Issue ID – PublishLike generated unique identifier for Issue which is actually used as Product ID for paid issues.

How do I sign out?

out Click on Sign Out link in upper right corner of site.

What is the Publication section?

It is the place where all your publications are listed. On the right column you get three icons to operate with your selected publication.
Info icon — opens up the screen where you can see and change some information about your publication, like name, price and so on.
Lock publication — temporarily prevents your publication from being downloaded
Delete publication — delete selected publication altogether with all issues and other additional files.

How do I start new publication?

blue button Click on blue button with Start new publication title. You'll get the small window where you enter all the details about your new publication. Right now, your publication will use free service plan called Lite which allows you to test how your magazine will look on iPad and play with all multimedia capabilities of PublishLike.com. When you finished with entering data about publication, press Save button. Congratulations! You made a first step.

Can I change the logo for my publication?

change logo Yes, just click on small rounded image adjacent to publication name (where it says Click here to change logo). Select image and voila!

Where are issues of my publication?

name Click on Publication's name. You'll be brought to Issues section. In this section, you will find all issues that you have uploaded, organized in the list. Each issue has the cover and some vital information listed under name of issue. What you'll need from this information is Issue ID which is used for selling your content via AppStore. Issues section has several actions available for each uploaded issue:

  • Multimedia - takes you to the page where you can customize content of each page by adding audio, video, links, rich text.
  • Delete an issue – deletes selected issue.
  • Advertisers – takes you to the page where you can enter information about advertisers for selected issue.
  • Publish/Unpublish – allows you to temporarily put selected issue on hold.
How do I upload new issue?

pdf Click on Upload PDF button. Select the file which represents your issue. Watch it downloading and processing by our server-side software. After processing is done, your new issue will appear on the bottom of the list with cover image. Cover image is automatically taken directly from first page of uploaded file. Do not close the page while uploading the file!

How can I change the order of appearance for issues?

arrow Just click on arrow buttons in the Order column and selected issue will be moved in desired direction.

How do I change the cover image?

cover Although, the cover is auto-generated , you always can change the cover image by clicking on Edit button on the left side of cover image. Select image, watch how it is downloaded. The size of image doesn't matter because our server will crop it to the right size.

How can I change the year of issue?

If you're magazine publisher, then you probably wants your issues grouped by years when your reader will open your app on iPad. To change the year, simply select it from drop-down selector in issue information.

How I can add multimedia content to an issue?

media Click on Multimedia button in row with desired issue. You will be brought to Multimedia page.
On the left side, you get a page preview with selector on top and links to various multimedia formats on the bottom.

  • To change page, simply select it in page selector on the top and see the preview image of selected page.
  • To add link(s) to page, click on Links. On the right side, enter Description and URL and click on Add link button. Repeat this process until you enter all links for selected page.
  • To add online video, click on Video. On the right side enter Name, URL of your youtube/vimeo online video and desription. Click on Save button. If you want to delete video from page, just click on Delete button.
  • To add audio, click on Audio. On the right side click on Upload file, select your audio file and watch it uploading. You can also enter Description and hit Save button, although it is not used right now. To delete audio from ppage, just click on Delete button.
  • To add gallery, click on Gallery link. On the right side, click on Upload image button and select image. After receiving the file service will generate thumbnail and show your picture. You can repeat this process several times to upload more images. For the best results, image resolution should be close 1024x768. To delete image, just click on X sign in the left lower corner of image thumbnail.
  • To enter rich text, click on Rich Text link. On the right side you'll see full-scale editor where you can insert HTML, DOC, RTF plain text and anything else which looks like formatted text. This editor has a lot of features and probably you'll find it useful. Save button will save all your changes and Delete button will completely delete Rich text for selected page.
How can I view statistics about selected issue?

Not implemented yet.

How can I delete issue?

del Click on Edit button adjacent to issue cover image. New small window will be brought to you. Press on Delete button in this window and confirm your intention to delete an issue. Be careful with deleting issues, especially when they are paid because you will need to set up new ProductID in ItunesConnect which can take time for review process.

How do I work with advertisers of issue?

advert Click on Advertisers button in Action column. It will brought a small window where you can enter the following information:

  • URL - link to advertiser's website, product page or anything in Internet.
  • Anchor - text which will be shown a link text.
  • Description - there you can enter description of advertiser or products or any other relevant information.

When you done, click on Add link button and all entered info will be added to the list. Repeat this process until you done with all your advertisers. If you want to delete one of advertisers just click on X icon in Actions column. If you want to wipe out whole list – click on Clean button on the bottom of screen.

How should I set up to sell my issues/books on AppStore?

First, it is highly recommended that you should enroll into Apple Developer program and get your own account. This way, the money from sales will be routed directly to your bank account. If you don't have any time and will to enroll, then you can use our financial services, but of course, there are drawbacks:

  • Money are sent to our account and then back to yours.
  • Before sending money back to you, we'll have to pay taxes, although, they are just 6% of gross income.
  • Sending money between bank accounts costs 20-40 US Dollars.

So, invest some time and $99 per year and save yourself a trouble.
Ok, let assume that you took our advice and have separate developer account in your name and app got approved. There are what you have to do to create new Products in ItunesConnectL

  1. Log in to your Publishlike.com account.
  2. Open issues of your publication
  3. Create new issue by uploading PDF file.
  4. Copy Issue ID shown in Issue information
  5. In separate browser tab open http://Itunesconnect.apple.com and log in using your credentials there.
  6. Select your application
  7. Click on Manage In-App Purchases button
  8. Click on Create New button
  9. Select Non-Consumable type of product (THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT!!!)
  10. Paste Issue ID into Product ID
  11. Enter Reference name. This can be just string which describes your issue for internal reference It is not shown anywhere but ItunesConnect itself.
  12. Click on Add Language. In opened window select language of description, enter display name and description which will be shown on Itunes and visible to user before he/she can make purchase. You can put a good description of your issue content to let your reader know what they've got to purchase. Press Save when you done.
  13. Make sure that Cleared for sale is set to Yes
  14. Select price tier which is the same as price tier set up in your account on PublishLike.com.
  15. Press Choose file to upload screenshot for review. Its size should be the same as screen resolution for iPad or iPhone.
  16. Overview everything you have entered.
  17. If you're satisfied – press Save button.
  18. In the list of Products check a newly created product and press Submit to Review button. After review your purchase will go live.
  19. Remember, that if you delete paid issue from your account on PublishLike then after you reupload the same file, you'll have to repeat the steps above. So, be careful with deleting issues.
How do I set the price for my publication?

Open Publication section by clicking on Publication link on the top menu. Click on Info icon in Action column. In opened window with all information about your publication click on Price selector and choose the price tier for your publication. The price tiers are the same as Apple uses for pricing apps and in-app purchases. Also, price set in PublishLike.com should match the price set in ItunesConnect. If you have product ID in ItunesConnect then go there and change the price tier for all issues accordingly.

Can I have several issues marked as Free in paid publication?

Yes, of course. Open Issues section by clicking on publication name. There is a Free icon in Actions column. Click on this icon and it will change to the dollar sign. Now, the selected issue is marked as free. You can repeat this process for several (even for all) issues.

How do I mark free issue as paid again?

Open Issues section by clicking on publication name. Select desired price tier in drop-down selector in Price section. Repeat selection for each issue that should be paid. Please note, that you have to make appropriate changes in your account at iTunesConnect to synchronize both accounts.

How can I change icon and screenshots show in iTunes?
  1. Go to http://www.ItunesConnect.apple.com.
  2. Login with your credentials.
  3. Click on Manage Your Applications link.
  4. Click on your app.
  5. Click on View details button.
  6. scroll down until you see label named Uploads and small Edit button adjacent to.
  7. Click on Edit.
  8. Now, you can change large 512x512 icon and screenshots which will be shown for user in itunes.
  9. Be patient! Your changes will be applied within few hours.

How to pay with WebMoney Transfer payment systems?

It's very easy to do. Just go to Finances, select an appropriate service plan and publication you wish to pay for. In drop-down selector adjacent to Buy button select Robokassa payment system and click Buy button. On the next page comfirm your putchase and you will be transferred to secured payment site provided by Robokassa. On Robokassa payment site select either Yandex.Money or WebMoney Tranfer and follow further instructions. Once you finish with payment transaction and payment system confirms the purchase then Order app button will immediately appear on your publication's action buttons. How to change issue's name?

By default, issue's name is equivalent to name of PDF file uploaded to Publishlike.com. To change it to something meaningful, click once on the name of PDF shown in list of issues and enter whatever you want. Click on Ok button to save your changes or Cancel to retain existing name.

Can I set different prices for issues?

Yes, you can have different prices for issues. Open Issues section by clicking on publication name. Select desired price tier in drop-down selector in Price section. Repeat selection for each issue that should have different price. Please note, that you have to make appropriate changes in your account at iTunesConnect to synchronize both accounts.

How to correctly make all graphics files for my app?

feed After your order is finished, you will be returned the page where you must upload all graphic files and provide some text information about your magazine app for iOS and Android. Graphics are separated into two groups: files for an iOS app and files for an Android app.
The set of graphic files for an iOS app has two sets:standard iPad screen resolution graphic and Retina-display resolution graphic. Resolution in pixels is shown under file's icon. Color depth is 24 bits for all graphics.
The purpose of graphic files for an iOS platform and how they should be created:

  1. App's icon. Shown on iPad's Homescreen. Color depth - 24 bits, no alpha channel, all angles are square.
  2. App's icon. Shown in app's page in AppStore on iPad and in Itunes on your computer. Color depth - 24 bits, no alpha channel, all angles are square.
  3. App's launch screen for a portrait orientation. Color depth - 24 bits, no alpha channel, all angles are square. Logo of magazine or relevant image can be placed here for a better visual impact upon app launch.
  4. App's launch screen for a landscape orientation. Color depth - 24 bits, no alpha channel, all angles are square. Logo of magazine or relevant image can be placed here for a better visual impact upon app launch.
  5. Issue archive's background. Color depth - 24 bits, no alpha channel, all angles are square. Use texture backgrounds without too bright colors is highly advisable!
  6. Magazine's logo shown in "About us" screen. Color depth - 24bits, transparent background, squared angles. Logo and name of magazine must be shown there.
  7. App's icon. Shown on iPad's Newstand right after downloading to the device until first app launch. Color depth - 24 bits, no alpha channel, all angles are squared. This icon should imitate the cover of magazine but not be absolute copy of real life's cover. Also, this icon should not copy an exact design of main app's icon.

How to export PDF for publishing in your app? We strongly recommend to use the Indesign settings shown on the picture above. It will produce a PDF with smallest possible file size and good looking content
